A wonderful thing happened two days ago. Lou Dobbs left CNN. I’d like to claim credit for this. A couple of years ago, I emailed CNN begging them to get Dobbs off the air. I offered up the only leverage I could, telling them that as soon as he came on the air, they immediately lost two eyeballs. The magnitude of my influence is now clear: I’m sure they didn’t ignore me. It just took two years for my email to bubble to the surface, and they took immediate action as soon as it did.
Sometime in the past 10 years, Dobbs transformed himself from an adequate, if unimpressive, business news anchor into a shameless populist demagogue and hypocrite. He became a prominent “birther” (the fringe types who still claim that Barack Obama is not a US citizen). He ranted about illegal immigration while apparently employing illegal immigrants to care for his daughter’s horses (evidently, “Buys Horses for Daughter” equals “Man of the People”). He railed against the “Export of American jobs” while publishing an investment newsletter that recommended the stocks of companies that were among the most aggressive in moving work off shore. He also conducted himself on-air in a manner that struck me as McCarthy-esque (for those who are old enough, I mean Joe, not Gene).
Did Dobbs jump? Was he pushed? I don’t know. I’m just glad he’s gone. In a world in which you can get a better idea of what’s going on by watching Comedy Central than you can from any of the supposedly serious news networks, this is at least a small move in a good direction.

We definitely owe you! Lou Dobbs was an annoyance to say the least. Perhaps he stopped taking his medication?
