Putting that New iPad to Work

Sometime soon, I may have something serious to say about the Libor rate-fixing scandal.  First I have to see if I can figure out what actually happened. Until then, here's something for those of us who just can't quite figure out how an iPad would make our lives better, even though we know tons of … Continue reading Putting that New iPad to Work

Maytag Repairmen and Ponzi Schemes

Last week, I met my friend Jeff Bishop for early morning coffee at our local Starbucks.  Jeff has a remarkable talent for making other people feel better about, well, pretty much everything.  I’m tempted to say that he should bottle it and sell it.  However, while that would make him wealthy, it also would make him … Continue reading Maytag Repairmen and Ponzi Schemes

Pin the Tax on the Donkey

The latest Time magazine arrived yesterday. John Roberts is on the cover, staring knowingly into the distance. He must be looking ahead to all of the Federal mandates that will be passed as a result of his ruling last week on the health care law. A few friends have asked me what I thought of … Continue reading Pin the Tax on the Donkey

Goat, Where Art Thou?

I had the good fortune to attend a Cubs game last night, courtesy of a friend who has season tickets.   It’s been five years or so since I went to a Cubs game, and it was a perfect night for baseball (or for just about anything else) – temperature in the mid-70s, low humidity, clear … Continue reading Goat, Where Art Thou?

It’s All Civil Unions to Me

My son and I had an interesting conversation the other day on the subject of gay marriage, which has been much in the news lately.  He is of a generation for whom sexual orientation is an absolute non-issue.  I come from a different time and have had to work my way there, which I think … Continue reading It’s All Civil Unions to Me

Security Theater

I thought I was done whining about airport security.  Truly, I did.  But some things worth whining about are also just too good not to share. I passed through O’Hare this week.  When I got to security, there was almost no line at the ID checkpoint, but there was a 15 minute wait from there … Continue reading Security Theater

There’s A Politically Correct Dog In Here Somewhere

OK, so, I got stuck in the shower again Sunday with Smiley and West.  It turns out that if you’re African-American, you should hate private equity.  Who knew?  And knowing something - anything - about private equity apparently is not a prerequisite.  (If you’re a new reader and you’re wondering why I was stuck in … Continue reading There’s A Politically Correct Dog In Here Somewhere

Exceptionally Proud, But Slightly Confusing

I thought I was being elegant in the post I put up the other night about my daughter, but apparently I was being confusing.  This helps me understand some past events in my life, but that's a story for another day. The young man next to my daughter in the video is my son, David.  … Continue reading Exceptionally Proud, But Slightly Confusing

Exceptionally Proud, Utterly Unapologetic

I’m going to take a break from my usual habit of ranting about assorted and sordid public affairs to speak personally for a moment. From the time my daughter, Julia, was five months old, she refused to sit on laps – mine or anyone else’s.  Even then, she had an agenda of her own.  From … Continue reading Exceptionally Proud, Utterly Unapologetic

Product Liability?

This headline appeared on the news crawl this morning:  "Swiss company recalls lethal injection drug used by Nebraska."  Really.  Apparently, it was diverted outside the manufacturer's normal supply chain.  They can't guarantee it's authenticity and want it back. They are concerned about what, dangerous side effects?
